ADK Raising Money for Scholarships
When I was a young, my parents told me time and time again that I was going to go to college. Not only was I going to go to college, but that I was going to get scholarships. It was pretty much a “you do this, or else!” situation, only with parental love and less threatening.
And boy howdy, did I try to get every scholarship I could. I applied for everything I could think of, from little $50 scholarships to big ones like Bright Flight. I made sure not to miss a single day of my senior year because there was a $100 scholarship for perfect attendance. I even researched into obscure scholarships at the recommendation of my guidance counselor. She said I should apply for everything I saw, just in case it was obscure enough that nobody else applied and I’d get it by default. I got as many recommendation letters as I could, because I asked pretty much everyone I had ever volunteered for or worked with. I think at one point I got a little overachieving, because the poor guidance counselor said I had more than any other person in the senior class that year. It wasn’t because I was smarter or more skilled than the others, I just asked everybody.
So I know that scholarships are a big deal. They’re important, and there’s a lot of competition out there. Kids are sometimes thinking about these things as young as 6th grade. So every little bit helps. That’s why I wanted to be sure we got the word about a new fundraising event to get some money to these scholarships.
The Alpha Delta Kappa (The Honorary Teacher’s Sorority) are hosting a garage and bake sale. It’ll take place on Thursday, June 6 from 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. and on Friday, June 7 from 7:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. They’ll be at 2606 and 2612 South Steward with a multitude of trinkets and treasures, clean clothing, baked items, and all proceeds go toward student scholarships.
So why not stop by, and help out! You might not only find that awesome thing for your summer fun, but you might also be helping a kid pay for their English 101 class.
