Governor Jay Nixon Declares a State of Emergency for Missouri

Governor Jay Nixon declared a state of emergency in Missouri as a widespread severe weather system continued to move across the state, bringing heavy rain, hail, straight-line winds, flooding and radar-indicated tornadoes. This severe weather follows several days of heavy rain throughout much of the state, leading to flooding along many streams and rivers. The severe weather threat continues tonight (June 1) in parts of Missouri, and is likely to continue tomorrow for much of the state.

Jimmy Owens' dominance of Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Mo. continued on Saturday night as the veteran driver notched his third consecutive Lucas Oil Show-Me 100 Presented by ProtectTheHarvest.com. Owens took the lead on lap 11 from Scott Bloomquist and was virtually unchallenged the rest of the way, picking up the $30,000 for his win in the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series and Lucas Oil Midwest Racing Association co-sanctioned event.

Former Sedalia Bombers Pitcher Mike Kickham Set For His First Major League Start

SAN FRANCISCO -- And the filling-in-for-Ryan Vogelsong winner is ... Michael Kickham, former pitcher for the Sedalia Bombers. The 24-year-old lefty will be called up from Triple-A Fresno to make Tuesday's start with the San Francisco Giants against Oakland, manager Bruce Bochy announced after Sunday's 7-3 win.

Kendra Barton Named Assistant Principal at Smith-Cotton Junior High

On Saturday night (May 18), the Sedalia School District 200 Board of Education approved the hiring of Ms. Kendra Barton, a fourth grade teacher at Horace Mann Elementary School, as assistant principal at Smith-Cotton Junior High School. She succeeds Mrs. Stephanie Jackson, who recently was named principal of Parkview Elementary School.

Kansas City Soldier Killed in Afghanistan

Sgt. 1st Class Trenton L. Rhea, 33, of Kansas City, Mo., died May 15 in Kandahar, Afghanistan.  He was a member of the 603rd Military Police Company, in Belton, Mo. He deployed under Operation Enduring Freedom.

Sedalia Man Pleads Guilty to Sodomy and Child Molestation Charges

In Circuit Court this morning (May 15), Ricky R. Baker of Sedalia, age 50, pleaded guilty to statutory sodomy in the second degree, child molestation in the second degree and two counts of child molestation in the first degree.  The offenses spanned several years prior to the defendant’s arrest last August.

Clinton Police Investigating Death of 12-Year-Old Girl

On Saturday morning (May 4) at 9:41 a.m., Clinton Police Officers were dispatched to 604 E. Lincoln St. in reference to a subject that was not breathing. Upon arrival, officers discovered 12-year-old Destiny Spitler of the home, who was not breathing and appeared to have no pulse. Officers performed CPR on the scene until an ambulance transported her to the Golden Valley Memorial Hospital Emergency Room where she was pronounced dead by Henry County Coroner Dain Sisk.
