Boonslick Regional Library’s Sedalia branch is preparing for the 2016-17 school year by transitioning from summer to fall programs. The LEGO club and Summer Reading Programs had high numbers of participants throughout the season.

“We were busy, busy, busy during June and July,” said Jackie Oliphant with Boonslick Regional Library. “We had great participation in all of our programs. We were really happy with how the Summer Reading Programs went.”

The LEGO club will continue through the transitional phase and upcoming academic year. A summer LEGO club meeting took place Aug. 1, with one remaining summer meeting scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 8.

“That’s open to all ages,” Oliphant said. “The kids just come down to the meeting room at the library. I’ve got the LEGOs out and they can just build whatever they want with the LEGOs. When they’re finished with their project, I’ll take a picture of them and their project to go on our website.”

The LEGO club will continue throughout the duration of the 2016-17 school year.

“It’ll probably stay on the first Monday of the month, but the time is going to change because there are other people who are using the meeting room,” Oliphant said. “So, I’ll get that information out whenever I get it figured out.”

Fall programs starting at the library include Tech 2 Go, story time sessions and monthly movies. Tech 2 Go is a program that is designed to assist patrons with use of their personal computers, iPads, Kindles or other electronic devices.

“We have a lady who volunteers her time every Saturday morning,” Oliphant said. “She’s there at 10 o’clock in the morning. Anybody can just come in, between 10 to 11 o’clock, and she will give them individual instruction on whatever it is that they’re having difficulty with.”

Boonslick has a downloadable library for patrons to download books from their collection. Some individuals have issues with the downloading process, so Boonslick developed Tech 2 Go to assist in those instances.

“A lot of times we’ll have patrons who come up to the desk and say, ‘I’m having trouble downloading something,’” Oliphant said. “A few members of the staff know how to do that, but some of us, like me, don’t.”

The Boonslick Regional Library’s monthly ‘bring-your-own-lunch’ movie continues into the school year. The movies are shown on the fourth Wednesday of every month. This month it falls on Aug. 24.

“I’m not sure what the movie is this month but usually it’s a good one,” Oliphant said. “They’re usually brand new releases, so that’s pretty popular.”

The “Friends of the Library” monthly meeting usually takes place on the second Thursday of each month. This month it falls on the opening day of the Missouri State Fair, so the library is postponing the meeting for 24 hours.

“Boonslick is always closed the first day of the fair,” Oliphant said. “So, our Friends meeting will be at 12:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 12.”

The next story time session for preschool-aged children will take place during the week of Oct. 16. To sign children up for story time or for information on any of Boonslick’s other programs, call (660) 827-READ (7323) or visit www.boonslickregionallibrary.com.
