Doug Shares Three Driving Pet Peeves: Tell Us Yours

I was driving around today and thought I'd share a few pet peeves that I notice on the road. I realize I'm far from perfect on my driving, so take these for what it's worth.

Bring the Black Bear Back to the Pettis County Courthouse [OPINION]

On Monday, July 22, the Sedalia City Council held a work session, and as a newsman for Townsquare Media here in Sedalia, I was there in that capacity. One of the topics of conversation that received the most response from everyone prior to the work session was the items of history that were displayed for many years in the Pettis County Courthouse, and of course, the Black Bear that was enclosed in a glass case and sat facing the Ohio Street entrance to greet people as they entered.

Jack Miller: Why I Support Sedalia’s Proposed Smoking Ban [OPINION]

While I attempt to stay as neutral as possible on issues I cover for the news, sometimes comments on an issue beg to be addressed. One of those issues is the smoking ban, that has been cussed and discussed to death both in the city council meetings and in the media, including in my news reports.

Does Neanderthal DNA Make You Racist? [OPINION]

The other night I was watching a program on the History channel about Neanderthal man, and how DNA tests show that we have some of their genes. Some scientists blame the brutish nature of some of us and the lack of progress in acceptance of societal change on this DNA. Recently, I have had cause to believe if that is true, then some of us may have gotten a bigger dose of Neanderthal DNA than others.

A Collection of Poems by Jack Miller

As a young man, I would never have admitted to writing poetry or singing love songs to my wife, but at the age I am now I can confess that I still do both. The poems I chose to put in my books are ones that do not need to be deciphered, and some people might think of them as too simple. I do feel obliged to inform the reader that some editors agree with that point of view, and some of the poems were rejected by several publications who know a lot more about poetry than I do. I am from Missouri, however, and have to be shown, so I invite criticism from anyone who cares to give me their comments.

No New Facts in National Geographic’s ‘Killing Lincoln’ [REVIEW]

After watching the television show 'Killing Lincoln' last night, I can officially say I felt cheated. I believe the story, as well as the Kennedy assassination, have been exploited and over-analyzed for years, and people like me only watch shows about them in the hope that the author has gained some insight or uncovered some new fact that will add some interest to the subject.

One More Reason People Dread Putting Up Christmas Lights [OPINION]

I have spent several days putting up my outside Christmas lights, and I have become what my grandmother referred to as "flumixed" which is a more polite way of saying how I felt earlier today.

Were Election Projections Announced Too Early During Election Coverage? [OPINION]

The election is now behind us, and after getting a chance to cover the election results from the Pettis County Courthouse, I had the chance to finally watch the national coverage. I have to say, this will not be a rant on the results and whether I agreed with them or not because I think you have received enough of that in the last 24 hours.  However, some of you wanted to talk about the coverage, especially the national items.

One of the big buzz words yesterday on television and radio stations was the word "projections."  I find it interesting that yesterday, as you flipped through the channels every TV station was trying to get ahead and project winners based on exit polls.  While exit polls are a valuable tool to try and guess on how one will win or lose a state, I have to wonder whether this is good practice.

Are Wet News Anchors Really Neccesary? [OPINION]

Is it just me, or is it a little silly to see a newsman knee deep in flood waters doing a news report on an approaching storm like Hurricane Sandy? Do they really think we don't know what a flooded street looks like?
