An informal farewell reception for outgoing Sedalia Police Chief John DeGonia was held in the lobby of the Municipal Building Friday afternoon.

DeGonia announced his retirement April 4, one day after the mayoral election, and said that his last day would be May 2 after a 32-year-career with the SPD.

It was announced on April 17 by the City of Sedalia that Commander Wirt would be assuming the duties of chief of police on April 27.

The City Council will officially recognize DeGonia for his lengthy service during their regular Council meeting May 7, according to DeGonia's longtime personal assistant Sandy Goff.

DeGonia, who was greeted by numerous co-workers and friends, said the occasion was hard to digest after 32 years, “but then when you see people show up like this, who appreciate your work, it makes you feel good. And I sure appreciate them,” he said.

“It's not goodbye, I'm just going across town,” DeGonia told KSIS, referring to his new venture as head of security for Bothwell Regional Health Center. “It was something I didn't go looking for, and they didn't come looking for me, it just happened and it felt right. So I'm excited to start that new adventure.”
