A Clinton man was killed Thursday morning in Bates County after hitting a deer on the highway.

John P. Gary, 35, was westbound in a 2006 Honda Civic on Route F. 0.4 miles west of County Road NW 1001 at 6:45 a.m. June 2 when he struck a deer, traveled off the right side of the roadway, struck a road sign, traveled down an embankment, struck a ditch and overturned, ejecting the driver.

The Missouri Highway Patrol report stated that Gary was not wearing a safety device at the time of the crash.

He was pronounced dead at the scene by Bates County Coroner Gary Schowengerdt. The body was transported to Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel in Butler, Mo.
