A deer was a factor in a car crash that caused serious injuries to a Clinton man early this morning in Johnson County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 28-year-old William K. Courtois of Clinton was the driver of a northbound 2012 Buick Regal on Missouri 23, three tenths of a mile south of Highway Y at 6:40 a.m. when the driver attempted to pass another vehicle. A deer then appeared in the roadway and the driver swerved to avoid it, causing the Buick to travel off the left side of the roadway, strike an embankment and overturn.

Courtois suffered serious injuries and was transported by Johnson County Ambulance to Research Hospital. He was wearing a safety device, the Patrol said.

The Regal was totaled and towed from the scene. Johnson County deputies assisted the Patrol with the investigation.
