In a day otherwise devoid of TV news, it looks as if the major networks are seizing the opportunity to tinker with their lineups. Where earlier saw CBS grant full-season orders to 'The Crazy Ones,' 'Mom' and 'The Millers,' NBC has now officially canceled the stagnant 'Welcome to the Family' and 'Ironside' remake, setting 'Community' season 5 to premiere in early 2014 along with 'Chicago Fire' spinoff 'Chicago P.D.'

'Community' season 5 will make its early debut on Thursday, January 2 with two fresh episodes beginning at 8:00 p.m., the following week settling into its normal 8:00 p.m. timeslot, with 'Parks and Recreation' to follow with its 100th episode on January 9. January 8, meanwhile, will see spinoff 'Chicago P.D.' premiering in the 10:00 p.m. slot.

Prior to January, however, NBC will fill the departing 'Ironside' and 'Welcome to the Family' slots with a mix of back-to-back “Parks and Recreation” episodes, an 'SNL Halloween' special, the latest, previously announced incarnation of 'The Voice,' and a live 'Sound of Music' rendition. 'The Sing-Off' will also broadcast for two weeks in December to help fill the gap.

‘Community’ season 5′s January return will see Nathan Fillion guest starring as a mysterious janitor, ‘Justified‘ star Walton Goggins guesting as another mysterious man who causes trouble for the Greendale gang, along with ‘Breaking Bad‘ star Jonathan Banks as Annie’s criminology Professor Hickey, and returns from Brie Larson, LeVar Burton, John Oliver’s Professor Duncan and comedian Rob Corddry as Jeff’s lawyer-rival Alan Connor. Donald Glover will exit the series after 5 episodes, the justifications of which caused a stir for the actor over Instagram, while Chevy Chase will not return.

Well, what say you? Are you happy to have 'Community' back a bit earlier than expected? Will you miss either 'Ironside,' or 'Welcome to the Family?'
