The NAB Show is basically anyone involved in any part of broadcasting’s dream come true. I remember walking in for the first time last year, seeing all of the radio equipment and drooling everywhere. It’s THAT awesome. I feel like me explaining it doesn’t do nearly as much justice as actually being there. 

The coolest piece of equipment that I stumbled upon this year was called the Stinger Mini for iPad from Simian BSI. Now I’m a fan of anything Simian related, but Stinger is every ADD kid’s best friend. Basically, there were 20 different sounds you could hear. Me, being the mature person that I am, pressed all of them at once.

You’re probably wondering why I felt the need to blog about this. I’ve always been a fan of radio and the different aspects to it, but the NAB Show added to my love of radio and broadcasting in general. The NAB Show is a rewarding experience and I’d advise anyone interested in broadcasting to try and make the trip out to Las Vegas at least once. You won’t regret it.

The Sedalia VFW Post 2591 honored War on Terrorism Veterans with a lunch, pie auction and ceremony on Sunday afternoon (Feb. 24) at the Sedalia VFW Building. The lunch consisted of ham n’ beans that was purchased and prepared by post member Bob Rinehart.

Richard Deford sang the national anthem and ‘God Bless America’, Mike Munsterman of Remedy for Redemption sang “Heroes”, Caitlin Bird provided music before the ceremony, the Pledge of Allegience was led by Senior Vice Commander Greg Bird, and the guest speaker was Sedalia’s mayor Elaine Horn.  Post Commander Larry Reven and Former Post Commander Gary Gill appreciated all those who came to the event.

There were many pies donated, which were auctioned off by Johnson and Bay Auctioneers. The pie auction and all funds raised by the donations from the ham n’ bean lunch went to the Wounded Warrior Program. The whole event raised $1,390 for the Wounded Warriors.

The Sedalia VFW wishes to thank Goody’s, Budweiser, Neet Archery, Yeager Harley Davidson, Golden Corral, Bodyworks Day Spa, Perkins, Third National Bank, Vincent’s, Skip Bay and all those who contributed a pie for the auction.

UPDATE: Congratulations to 14-year-old Cheyenne Anderson of Smithton, winner of the 2013 Youth of the Year Award.  Cheyenne will move on to the state competition held in Jefferson City in early April.

Fifteen Boys & Girls Clubs of West Central Missouri members will compete for the local 2013 Youth of the Year Title on Jan. 24 at 6 p.m. at the Fox Theater in Sedalia, Mo.

Being named Youth of the Year is the highest honor a Boys & Girls Club member can receive. The Youth of the Year title recognizes outstanding contributions to a member’s family, school, community and Club, as well as personal challenges and obstacles overcome.  Tupperware Brands awards each state winner a $1,000 college scholarship and each regional winner a $10,000 scholarship. The national winner receives an additional scholarship up to $50,000 from the Rick and Susan Goings Foundation.

The contestants will be evaluated by five judges:

• Commander Matt Wirt, Sedalia Police Department
• Dianne Simon, 2012 Pink Flamingo Award Winner, Property Manager at Thompson Hills Investment Group
• Senator Mike Parson, Majority Caucus Whip and 28th District Senator in the Missouri State Assembly
• Patty Wagenknecht, Owner, Wagenknecht Farms, LLC
• Dick Hutchison, President, La Monte Community Bank

Here are the 2013 candidates for the Boys and Girls Clubs of West Central Missouri’s Youth of the Year:

Judges will select one winner for the Elementary Youth of the Year (members ages 8 – 13) and one for the Teen Youth of the Year (members ages 14 -18). The Teen Youth of the Year winner will advance to the state competition in early April.

They had all sorts of stuff on sale for their Grand Opening.  They’d done a lot of work to make it as awesome as possible!

Sierra Bullets recently honored Ballistic Technician, Paul Box of Otterville, for not missing one minute of work since 2003!  Paul has gone to some pretty extreme lengths over the last 10 years including sleeping under his desk to avoid being tardy during a snowstorm.  No matter what issue arose, Paul always found a way to be at work and on time.

I was told by Mrs. Tonya Edgar, a 3rd grade teacher, that the tradition of making gingerbread houses goes back at least 15 years, if not more. Students created their masterpieces with seven graham crackers, frosting and a paper plate. These were the foundation of the gingerbread homes that 80 students made.

Along with the foundation, kids could use candy canes, red hots, peppermint candy, hard candy, M&M’s, chocolate chips, gumdrops, marshmallows, Skittles, licorice, Starburst, Hershey Kisses, sprinkles, Gummy Lifesavers, powdered sugar and more.

About 10 parents came to volunteer to help the kids, which meant everything from setting up to cleaning up, and one brave person made the frosting for all 80 kids.

It was a lot of fun to help bring some cheer to the kids and assist with the kids in making sure the gingerbread house stayed together.  I even helped one girl put her gingerbread house back together after it fell just as she was putting the finishing touches on it.

I think volunteering time is important, and if you can do it with your kids, all the better.  There were several moms and dads volunteering at the event, and without them, I don’t think the hour and a half given to complete the gingerbread houses would have been enough.

I think this was the holiday cheer I needed to get back into the holiday spirit, and I’m sure the teachers needed that lift too with this being the first day of new security at Skyline Elementary.

A big thanks and thumbs up goes to Mrs. Kelly McFatrich, principal at Skyline Elementary, and all the 3rd Grade Teachers for putting this event on for the kids; Mrs. Patricia Ferolito, Mrs. Kathy Garrison, Mrs. Tonya Edgar and Mrs. Sonya Schnicker.

Steve The Elf is the elf that covers Pettis County and reports to Santa directly. Steve the Elf will read ,when he can, some of the letters boys and girls have sent to the North Pole, during his cocoa breaks, on Newstalk 1050 KSIS.

Steve says hi and thanks to Miss Sheri and Miss Denise from Carpenters Kids and Miss Monica from Parkview Christian Preschool for gathering the letters to Santa. Special thanks to the parents who also assisted with their children’s letters to Santa! Merry Christmas!
