The Harlem Ambassadors basketball team visited the Fred E. Davis Center at State Fair Community College on Sunday. Sept. 21, 2014.

The Harlem Ambassadors travel across the country and bring a comedy style of basketball to city to city. With it, they bring a message of keeping kids off drugs and staying in school.

Lade Majic leads the Harlem Ambassadors and is a graduate of MU and is proud that all her players are drug free and college grads. Even during the game, she has an open challenge to anybody that wants to test her players for drugs, they may request it.

The Harlem Ambassadors issued a press release about their stay.

The Harlem Ambassadors would like to extend a special thank you to event organizers Dana Page and Darren Pannier who planned and promoted the event. The SFCC Slammers were energetic and enthusiastic opponents and we thank all of the players for their good sportsmanship.

This event would not have been possible without the support and generosity of local community sponsors, the State Fair Community College Athletics members, and the event volunteers.

The SFCC Slammers were made up of community members Taylor Johnson, Shelly Williams, Sheriff Kevin Bond, Matt Webb, Xavier Jackson, Doug Hunolt, Dr. Joanna Anderson, Coach Steve Vandevender, Kyle Weymuth, Dr. Brent Bates, Coach Rick Grunden, Matt Mergen, Commander Larry Ward, Doug Sokolowski and were coached by Sacred Heart State Champion Coach Steve Goodwin.

On a personal note, I had a blast playing in this game and their was some great comedy between the Ambassadors and Sheriff Bond and Larry Ward at the free throw line. I'm not sure the Ambassadors knew they were law enforcement, but that made the comedy routine funnier. The funny thing when I play again is that Mergen wore 35, Ward wore 40 and I wore 50. We were required to do pushups for everytime we airball.  It figures the highest three numbers on the team had to do it, but it was all in good fun. I'll wear a smaller number like Taylor Johnson had with the 1/2 number.

Bottom line the SFCC Athletic Program benefited and a good time was had by all, including the packed house.

For those curious, the final score was Ambassadors 56 SFCC Slammers 25.

Thanks to the sponsors who made the event possible: McDonalds of Sedalia; State Farm Insurance Agents Valerie Bloess, Matt Mergen and Margaret Ward; WK Chevrolet; Comfort Inn; Gill Signs; Pummill's Sporting Goods; and State Fair Community College.

Thanks to State Farm Insurance Agent Matt Mergen for the photos.
