A Chicago high school football player has died after suffering injuries during a Thursday game.

Chicago Public School officials said Friday the teen, identified by the Cook County medical examiner's office as 17-year-old Andre Smith, died after being taken by Chicago Fire Department ambulance from Stagg Stadium to Oak Lawn's Advocate Christ Medical Center in critical condition. The department said the senior was unconscious but breathing while being transported.

Smith was injured while playing for Bogan High School against Chicago Vocational Career Academy. It was not revealed what injuries Smith suffered during the game won by CVS.

Chicago schools CEO Forrest Claypool said the hearts of district officials are "heavy and saddened" to learn of the student's death. He added grief counselors are at Bogan to provide counseling for students.
