Beekeeping Workshops Create a Buzz in Sedalia [INTERVIEW]
Now is the time for Sedalia Gardeners and hobbyists to start thinking about the spring. The Henry County Extension Office has a workshop on beekeeping that might help you get started.
Maybe you've always wanted to keep bees, or maybe grandpa or your dad kept bees and now you finally want to keep honey bees. Since our area is very invested in agriculture and rural life, this kind of thing can be just the ticket for those of you looking to save money or help the environment. Honeybees are an integral part of both local and global food systems. Many individuals in our area are interested in keeping a few hives in their back yard, but don’t know where to start.
The Henry County Extension Center is offering a beginning beekeeping workshop on Saturday, Dec. 7 - but as of the 3rd, they're all full up. But, you don't have to be left out of the opportunity to keep bees. There will be future workshops, and other ways to get more information.
I got to talk with Travis Harper of the Henry County Extension about the benefits of keeping bees and a little about how to get started.
So now's the time to really get to thinking about whether beekeeping is right for you. If you want to get started this spring, get reading today! If you need any other information, or if you'd like to maybe find out about beekeeping workshops, you can call Verlinda Talley or Travis Harper at 660-885-5556 for registration details. Don't forget to check out the website Travis recommended for the Missouri Beekeepers Association.
