Although original director James Wan has left the franchise to move onto a little movie called 'Fast and Furious 7,' the 'Insidious: Chapter 3' trailer shows that this awesomely bonkers horror franchise is still in good hands. Series screenwriter Leigh Whannell is now in the director's chair and he definitely seems to have picked up a thing or two from his old collaborator.

The first thing you'll notice about 'Insidious Chapter 3' from the trailer is that it's a prequel and a period piece. This is obvious because characters who died in previous entries are still alive and kicking (and screaming) this time around, but it's also obvious because everyone's cell phones are so old. Yes, we really have reached a point where even period pieces feature characters texting each other.

'Insidious Chapter 3' seems to abandon Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne and the Lambert family altogether, choosing to focus on the real stars of the franchise: psychic Elise and her slightly bumbling technicians. This is a great decision because these characters have been consistent stand-outs in a genre that often glosses over creating memorable characters. They deserve their own time in the spotlight. And then there's the fact that you can only haunt the Lamberts so much before it just starts getting silly.

Anyway, the trailer features everything you'd expect: jump scares, dark spooky rooms, and another creepy rendition of "Tiptoe Through the Tulips." Yeah, we're still on board with these things. [UPDATE: You can see the new 'Insidious 3' poster below, as well.]

Here's the official synopsis:

The newest chapter in the terrifying horror series is written and directed by franchise co-creator Leigh Whannell. This chilling prequel, set before the haunting of the Lambert family, reveals how gifted psychic Elise Rainier (Lin Shaye) reluctantly agrees to use her ability to contact the dead in order to help a teenage girl (Stefanie Scott) who has been targeted by a dangerous supernatural entity.

'Insidious Chapter 3' will open on May 29, 2015.
