A man charged with first-degree murder in the death of his 3-year-old daughter in southwest Iowa has been sentenced to life in prison.

The Omaha World-Herald reported Friday that 26-year-old Charles Hall was sentenced last week in the 2015 death of Janyiah Hall.

Authorities responded to a 911 call at Hall's residence in Bedford on May 22. Janyiah was found unresponsive and later pronounced dead. An autopsy said she died of asphyxiation, most likely by drowning.

Taylor County Attorney Clinton Spurrier has said Janyiah had been staying with Hall and his girlfriend, April Clair, for several weeks, but normally lived in the Chicago area with her mother.

Clair pleaded guilty to child endangerment resulting in bodily injury in the case. Prosecutors say Clair did not seek medical help for the child.
