Janet R. Steen, 77, of Sedalia, died Monday, November 23, 2015, at Sylvia G. Thompson Residence Center.

 

She was born November 27, 1937, in Sedalia, a daughter of the late Virgil and Marjorie (Miller) Ragar. On May 30, 1963, in Sedalia, she married Donald Steen, who survives of the home.

 

She was a 1955 graduate of Smith Cotton High School and attended Central Missouri State College in Warrensburg. In her early working years, she worked at the Social Security office. She later worked as a guidance secretary at the Sedalia Middle School - a position she held for over 30 years.

 

Janet knew her Lord and Savior was Jesus Christ and helped spread the gospel through music. She was a faithful member of Wesley United Methodist Church and sang in the choir for over 50 years. She was active in the Sedalia Chorale, Helen G. Steele Music Club, and the Sedalia Symphony Board. She was also the coordinator for "The Messiah” for many years, worked for Bothwell Auxiliary, and helped organize the beginning of what is known today as The Scott Joplin Festival.

 

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two children, Steven Steen (Etta), of Concordia, and Marjorie Sipe (Scott), of Bridgeton; a brother, Stan Ragar (Myrna), of Sedalia; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

 

Funeral service will be 11 am, Monday, November 30, 2015 at Wesley United Methodist Church with Rev. Dr. Rick Adams officiating. Pallbearers will be Brian Steen, Carl Lewis, Angela Sipe, Kevin Holbert, Don Plowman and Kim Graves. Honorary pallbearer will be Daniel Steen. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery.

 

There will be no visitation.
