The first phase of rehabilitation work on the Katy Bridge in Boonville has begun.

The bridge, built in 1931, was the subject of a nearly decade-long fight against plans to tear it down before the city of Boonville took possession in 2013.

Project manager Noah Barnes says brush and trees have been removed from the bridge and work equipment is on site. He says the goal is to make the bridge accessible to pedestrians by next spring.

The Columbia Daily Tribune reports future plans call for renovating the lift span and rehabilitating the north tower before eventually connecting the bridge with the Katy Trail in Howard County.
