‘Look Good, Feel Better’ Revitalizes Sedalia’s Cancer Patients

As someone who has seen cancer up close, I can tell you that often, it’s not pretty.  And for a lot of us, how we look is intrinsic to our personal identity.  If you don’t look like yourself, you don’t feel like yourself.  So In collaboration with the American Cancer Society, Bothwell Regional Health Center offers “Look Good, Feel Better.”This free program teaches beauty techniques to women in active cancer treatment to help cope with treatment-related side effects that may affect one’s appearance. The program addresses hair, skin, nails, and make-up. Women will learn ways to disguise hair loss with wigs, scarves and other accessories. A complimentary cosmetic kit is provided.

It’s something to help these ladies feel a little better with some pampering on an aesthetic level.  While we know that what’s inside is the most important, there’s a certain comfort to be taken with your outward appearance.  It’s an easy little pick me up to make you feel a little better, and that little bit better can mean the world to a struggling cancer patient.

My mom went through cancer for a few years toward the end of her life.  She had ovarian, lung and brain cancer all in the course of one year.  I know that the little things I did for her, like fixing her nails, giving her some nice hats and stuff like that really helped her. It’s something to kind of remind you that you are still a human, not just a patient.  It’s also a good way to remind yourself that you are not the disease or what the disease has made you.  So yeah, it seems a little like focusing on the outward, but it really does tie back into the inner beauty of all of these wonderful people.

The next meeting is 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 8, at the Susan O’Brien Fischer Cancer Center, Bothwell Regional Health Center, 601 E. 14th St., Sedalia.
An RSVP is required to ensure seating and to reserve a cosmetic kit. Please call the American Cancer Society at (573) 635-4839 to reserve your makeup kit and request a wig, if needed. All services are provided free of charge.

If you know someone in cancer treatment who could use a little practical pick me up this holiday season, tell them about Look Good, Feel Better.  Every little bit helps!

Cosmetically yours,
Behka
