The search for a man suspected of gunning down a Clinton police officer has shifted northwest to the Chilhowee area.

UPDATE - KMBC-TV reports that authorities searched the area for 39-year old Ian McCarthy. A post on the Missouri State Highway Patrol's Twitter page indicates that authorities searched a residence Tuesday afternoon, but did not locate McCarthy.

Johnson County authorities were called in to assist with the search.

McCarthy is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Clinton Police officer Gary Michael.

Investigators said Michael was fatally shot after pulling over McCarthy late Sunday night near 2nd and Green streets.

Police found McCarthy's vehicle nearby at Green and Water streets, and believed he was on foot in the Clinton area. But late Tuesday morning, authorities began focusing on the Chilhowee area. McCarthy is considered armed and dangerous. Residents are urged not to approach him. If anyone sees McCarthy, call 911 immediately.
