Authorities have released the names of two people killed in a multi-vehicle pileup on Interstate 70 in mid-Missouri.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol identified the victims as 46-year-old Charles S. Moore, of Nicholasville, Kentucky, and 46-year-old Robert S. Brainerd, of St. Louis. The patrol says the crash happened when a pickup truck hydroplaned and the westbound tractor-trailer that Moore was driving swerved to avoid it.

The truck became partially lodged under the unit the tractor was towing. Moore's rig then hit another truck before crossing into eastbound traffic, colliding head-on with a tractor-trailer that Brainerd was driving. Another tractor-trailer then rammed into the rear of Brainerd's rig. A pickup truck and a Jeep then were caught up in the crash.

Five other people were transported from the scene in ambulances.
