Michael Ray Smith, Sr., 54, of Sedalia, died Monday, June 8, 2015, at his home.

He was born December 24, 1960, in Sedalia, a son of the late Robert D. and Dorothy Ann (Bethke) Smith. On February 22, 1985, he married Karena Hood and on February 29, 2004, he married Linda Booyer, both whom survive.

Michael attended school in Green Ridge where he loved to learn and excelled in math. He graduated from Green Ridge High School in 1978 and continued his education at State Fair Community College receiving an Associates degree and numerous trade certifications. He worked in various area factories and found his passion as a woodworker at Papa Jake’s Woodshop. He served his country honorably in the Army and Army National Guard.

He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and attended Our Savior Lutheran Church.

Michael was never one to sit idle. His hobbies included woodworking, gardening, fishing, playing pool and cards. He was an avid fan of the Kansas City Chiefs and Kansas City Royals. Michael was a hard worker and always made sure his family’s needs were met. His children and grandchildren meant everything in the world to him. He loved desserts and pumpkin pie, chocolate cream pie and mint chip ice cream were his favorites.

He is also survived by three children, Michael Ray Smith, Jr. (Lori), Independence, Rachael Goltry (Derick), Davisburg, MI, and Amber Reed (David), Sedalia; three step-children, Tammie Raines (William) and Joseph Booyer, Sedalia, and Steven Bailey, Springfield; one brother, James Smith, Sedalia; one sister-in-law, Laura Smith, of Shawnee, KS; and 13 grandchildren, Alexander Smith, Elizabeth Goltry, Blake Goltry, Cayden Reed, Christopher Reed, Cameron Reed, Siara Reed, Destiny Allen, Madison Rose Smith, Arizona Bailey, Dalton Bailey, Krystelle Goltry and Kaylee Goltry.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a daughter, Sarah Smith, who died at birth, a brother, Kyle Smith, and a sister, Karla Smith, who died in infancy.

Visitation will take place 6pm-8pm, Wednesday, June 10, 2015 at McLaughlin Funeral Chapel.

Funeral service will be 11 am, Thursday, June 11, 2015 at Our Savior Lutheran Church with Rev. Chris Kellogg and Rev. Andrew Tessone officiating. Pallbearers will be James Smith, Shannon Kilcrease, Josh Hood, David Reed, Robert Booyer and Justin Lee. Honorary pallbearers will be Alexander Smith, Elizabeth Goltry, Blake Goltry, Cayden Reed, Christopher Reed, Cameron Reed, Siara Reed, Destiny Allen and Madison Rose Smith. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery with full military honors conducted by the US Army and VFW Post 2591.
