A motorcyclist who sped away after an officer tried to pull him over has died after crashing on Interstate 55 south of St. Louis.

The crash happened Sunday evening. The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the victim was 30-year-old Harold M. Frick of Arnold.

Police say around 6 p.m., a Jefferson County deputy tried to stop the motorcyclist near Pevely. Police say the driver refused to pull over and reached a speed of up to 120 mph has he sped away. The deputy did not give chase. A short time later, another deputy encountered the motorcycle.

Authorities say the second officer also did not chase the man when it became evident he wasn't stopping. Frick died when his motorcycle crashed into a cable barrier.
