One of the advantages of being an island’s only resident is that you don’t have to wear clothes. Masafumi Nagasaki, a 76-year-old man who has lived alone for the past 20 years on the “inhospitable” one kilometer island of Sotobanari, has certainly taken advantage of that.

For a while, the Japanese retiree would put something on when ships passed by the island, which is between Japan and Taiwan. But age has stripped him of that modesty, and now he only sports his birthday suit when he’s in his unique home.

Nagasaki, who was previously an entertainment executive, survives on the rice cakes and water he buys on his weekly journey to a neighboring island.

He admits life on an island that’s full of mosquitoes and has no natural fresh water is tough, but he wouldn’t give it up for anything.

“I don’t do what society tells me, but I do follow the rules of the natural world,” he said. “You can’t beat nature so you just have to obey it completely.”

And, according to Nagaski, he is on Sotobanari for the long haul. “Finding a place to die is an important thing to do, and I’ve decided here is the place for me,” he explained.
