The Oscars may not carry the same amount of commercial clout as the Super Bowl, but it still offers advertisers an opportunity to appeal to a very specific audience. In this case, it’s Apple and legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese teaming up to sell the cinematic potential of the iPad. And yes, this commercial wants to tug on your heartstrings.

Scorsese himself doesn’t physically appear in the commercial, but his speech to the 2014 graduating class at NYU Tisch School of the Arts plays over the whole thing. Underneath the inspiring speech from one of the greatest filmmakers of all time, we see images of film students hard at work, making a film using only an iPad. In many ways, it is a little gimmicky (your iPad can do everything!), but the there’s no denying how cool it is to see a little tablet attached to a dolly rig to film a scene ... and then get used to edit the movie ... and then get used to score it.

Knowing that Scorsese came from humble roots gives the commercial a little extra power. Of course the guy who toiled to make Mean Streets would find the (relatively) inexpensive iPad and the number of opportunities it offers thoroughly inspiring. It’s easy to imagine a young film student watching this thing, buying an iPad and setting out to make a masterpiece.

And then you run out of battery and an ill-timed update causes a bunch of footage to get lost, but that’s a story for another day.
