Pettis County along with the rest of Missouri held a primary election on August 7 to elect candidates for the November General Election. In spite of the fact that there were a lot of uncontested races, the election exceeded expectations according to the Pettis County Clerk Nick LaStrada, who said the voter turnout was 21% for Pettis County.

Incumbent Governor Jay Nixon carried Pettis County with 934 votes, which was 85.37% of the votes cast in the race. Susan Montee won the County with 541 votes in the Lt. Governor’s race on the Democrat ticket, getting five times the number of votes of her nearest competitor. Governor Nixon’s opponent in the November election will be Republican David Spence if the rest of Missouri follows Pettis County’s lead.

Spence finished well ahead of his Republican opponents with 62.13 % of the vote, or 2479 votes. His nearest challenger got 644 votes in the race. Incumbent Republican Peter Kinder carried Pettis County with 1831 votes followed by a strong second place finisher Brad Lager with 1515, which could mean a horse race for the rest of Missouri for the Lt. Governor’s spot on the Republican ticket in November.

There were three strong candidates in the race for the U.S. Senate spot on the Republican side of the ticket, vying to face Democrat Senator Claire McCaskill in November. Sarah Steelman captured the most votes in Pettis County with 1561, followed by Todd Akin with 1230, and John Brunner with 1183. At the time Pettis County polls closed that race was still to be decided, but at around 10:15 p.m., Todd Akins was declaring victory in the race.

Republican Vicky Hartzler, Incumbent U.S. Representative for the 4th Missouri District, carried 82.59 percent of the votes in Pettis County in her race to return to Washington for a second term. Hartzler will face Teresa Hensley the Democrat candidate, who was unopposed in the primary.
