Richard E. Johnston, 75, of rural Lincoln, died Thursday, November 20, 2014, at Golden Age Living Center, Stover.  He was born on July 26, 1939, at Des Moines, Iowa, a son of Edwin Drakely and Olma Alice (Switzer) Johnston.

He grew up on the family farm in Hartford, Iowa, where he was a member of the Hartford Presbyterian Church, and in 1957, he graduated from Hartford High School.  He served his country honorably in the United States Air Force.  On December 14, 2004, in Apache Junction, Arizona, he was united in marriage to Vicki VanZee.

He was a farmer, raising hogs, cattle, and row crops until 1994.  He also drove a truck for Pepsi and Yellow Freight.  In 1996, he moved to Mesa, Arizona.  He was a maintenance officer for the Arizona wing of the Confederate Air Force, where he helped restore old aircraft.  In 2006, he moved to his present home at Lakeview Heights, Missouri.  He enjoyed riding motorcycles.  His first bike was a 1942 Harley Davidson, which he purchased in pieces in 1950 and had to put it together.

He is survived by:
his wife, Vicki Johnston of the home;
his daughter, Julie Johnston of Carlisle, Iowa;
his son, Troy Johnston of Hartford, Iowa;
his brother, James Switzer Johnston and his wife Judy of Lincoln;
six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorial services will be held at a later date in Hartford, Iowa.  Arrangements are under the direction of the Fox Funeral Home in Cole Camp.
