Richard Paul Coats, 87, of Sedalia, died Tuesday, June 2, 2015 at Bothwell Regional Health Center.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 9, 2015 at McLaughlin Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Jim Downing officiating. Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral chapel. Burial will be in Crown Hill Cemetery with full military honors by the U.S. Army and VFW Post 2591.

Born July 30, 1927 in Sedalia, he was the son of the late James E. and Edna Mae Bundy Coats. On September 2, 1948 in Sedalia, he was married to Delores Ann Taylor, who preceded him in death on February 16, 2008. He is survived by a daughter, Terry Herrick, of Sedalia; one sister, Dorothy Cairns, of the state of California; three grandchildren, Brian Herrick, Washington, IL, Dustin Herrick, of Jefferson, GA and Jason Herrick, of Sedalia; three great-grandchildren, Bailey Herrick, Halle Herrick and Alexander Herrick. He was also preceded in death by three sisters, Aillene Boyd, Opal Lorton and Erma Gingrich; and three brothers, Jack Coats, Robert Forsberg and Jimmy Coats.

Mr. Coats was raised and educated in Sedalia. He served his country in the Merchant Marines, and went on to serve in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a carpenter by trade and used his skills to start the Overhead Door Company and later worked for Dugan’s Door Company. He attended First United Methodist Church Celebration Center.
