During the first week of July and August, rides on the City Bus will be free, according to Jack Menges, a member of the Community Transportation Partnership (CTP).

The reason for the free rides is to promote the service, which offers a west-side route and an east-side route. A transfer point is located at Bing's west in the State Fair Shopping Center, and it doesn't cost anything to transfer. A normal ride costs $1.50, he noted.

The west-side route runs every 30 minutes, and the east-side route runs every hour.

You can buy bus passes for $5 (for four rides) from the driver or the OATS office, located in the old Amtrak building in downtown Sedalia. The $10 pass is good for eight rides (which is $1.25 per ride). On the back of the completed pass is a coupon for either Steak 'n Shake or Dairy Queen goodies.

“Some people are using it to go to work or for a doctor's appointment,” Menges noted. And the drivers are very friendly, he added. They will help you if you need it.

Children ages eight or older can ride The Bus by themselves as long as they have payment for the ride,” he said. “But they have to be mature enough to handle this on their own.”

Routes and scheduling are posted online at the Sedalia-Pettis County United Way's website, said United Way Executive Director Staci Harrison said. “It will be just another avenue for folks to be able to take a look at this service that have in our community.”

“We're finding a lot of people in the senior housing areas ride The Bus, because a lot of them don't have a car,” Menges said.

Harrison noted the upcoming CACTUS Stuff the Bus event, scheduled for Saturday, July 9 at the Sedalia Wal-Mart. “Plan on shopping that day and help us stuff the (school) bus for our area youth. CACTUS is on target to support about 2,000 youth in Pettis County this year (with school supplies).

Packing for the event will take place Aug. 4-5 for later distribution.

A date for a Day of Caring is approaching as well. The event will take place Oct. 22. Applications are due July 8. For more information, email spcuwsedalia@gmail.com.
