Authorities have suspended the search for a 29-year-old kayaker who fell into the Mississippi River after hitting towlines between two barges.

Dalton Bast was last seen around 4 a.m. Thursday on the river at St. Louis. Barge workers saw him fall and threw a line, but their effort was unsuccessful.

KMOV-TV reports that rescue crews from several agencies responded, but were unsuccessful in locating Bast. The U.S. Coast Guard suspended the search Thursday night.
