The Sedalia Fire Department responded to the 2nd fire in Sedalia within a 24-hour period Wednesday evening. Yesterday KSIS brought you the news of an apartment building at 3rd and Harrison that was reported on fire at 10:45 Tuesday night due to a space heater. According to Captain Matt Irwin of the Sedalia Fire Department that fire left ten families without a place to stay prompting the local American Red Cross to help place them into the Best Western on South 65 Highway. The second fire was reported in a garage at 117 East Jackson. The fire department arrived at 5:33pm Wednesday evening, and were on the scene approximately one-hour according to Battalion Chief Paul Withers of the Sedalia Fire Department. Both fires were apparently the product of space heaters either left alone, or placed to close to something that could catch fire. There were no smoke detectors in the apartment that caught fire in the Harrison Apartments according to Captain Irwin. Irwin pointed out that the fire department has smoke detectors available at the fire stations, and they will provide those to Sedalia residents who don’t have one if they will come to the fire department. Also according to Irwin the danger of things like Christmas lights or anything else that might overload an electrical is a danger this time of the year. He also said a space heater should be turned off when you leave the home.
