October is designated as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM) is a group effort of non-profit organizations, doctors and health providers and government agencies working together to promote breast cancer awareness, share information on the disease, and provide greater access to services.

Everybody is bound to know someone who has been affected or care about this cause in their own personal way. So, let's get involved! Here's what Sedalia is starting to plan here locally to join in on the fight.

As part of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, Ellis Fischel Cancer Center will sponsor after-hours “mammothon” breast cancer screenings from 6 p.m. to midnight Friday, Oct. 4, and 7 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 5.

The screenings will be held at Ellis Fischel’s new facility at University Hospital, One Hospital Drive in Columbia, Mo. Parking will be available in the Patient-Visitor Parking Garage adjacent to University Hospital. To receive a mammogram, women must be age 40 or older or have a doctor’s order. In addition to breast screenings, staff at the mammothon will provide information and education about breast cancer, as well as refreshments and door prizes. Mammograms will be available by appointment only. For more information or to make an appointment, please call Ellis Fischel Cancer Center at (573) 882-8511.

On Oct. 15, Colton’s will donate 10% of its sales to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

Show your support during the month of October by purchasing a Colton’s For a Cure Bracelet or T-shirt.  Limited availability on merchandise. Participation varies. Visit ColtonsSteakHouse.com

Dugan’s Paint and Flooring Center is hosting a License to Spill event with their Let’s Decorate for A Cure.

The event will be on Thursday, Oct. 17 from 5:30 p.m to 8:30 p.m. at the store, located at 3103 Erika Ave.  Attendees are invited to spill everything from Ketchup to Kool Aid to wine and coffee on the SmartStrand Sorona carpet to see if it will come clean with just water.  The annual LDFAC event partners with Bothwell Regional Health Center foundation and raises funds for the Gene Loveall Cancer Care Services.  There will be numerous vendors at the event including Sedalia OB/GYN sharing information about exams and screenings.  The public is invited to attend.

Help raise money for breast cancer research by getting your hair cut during the annual Clip for A Cure event at Smart Style Family Hair Salon.

Saturday, Oct. 19, 10% of all proceeds from haircuts will be donated to the Regis Foundation for Breast Cancer Research, which supports early diagnosis, prevention, treatment and research for cures.  To further raise awareness, the salon will sell $2 breast cancer awareness rings, $12 bracelets, and other limited edition pink products.

Grab your Halloween costume and come race for a great cause at Clover Dell Park on Saturday, Oct. 26 at the Trick or Trot for TaTas 5K and Monster Dash Kids’ Fun Run.

There will be prizes for the best guy, best girl and best group costumes, as well as for best costume for ages 2-6 and 7-12.  All proceeds from the run will go to Bothwell Regional Health Care Center Foundation’s Cancer Services Fund.  The race begins at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 26. Runners can register by clicking this link. Everyone who registers by Oct. 15 will receive a T-shirt.  We’ll be taking last minute registrations at the event until Oct. 26 at 8 a.m.

If your group or organization wants to promote their event to promote Breast Cancer Awareness, just let us know here at the station and we'll get the word out!  We hope to see everyone out there in full pink to support this great cause.

Awarely yours,
Behka
