A Sedalia man faces a federal charge accusing him of trying to arrange sex with a 14-year-old girl.

The U.S. attorney's office in Kansas City says in a release that 71-year-old Paul Robert Cannon was charged Friday with trying to induce a minor to engage in illicit sexual activity.

Prosecutors say a Boone County detective responded to an online ad that Cannon posted seeking sex with minors. The prosecutor's office says the undercover detective pretended to be a woman with a 14-year-old daughter and exchanged emails and texts with Cannon in which Cannon detailed his intentions to have sex with the teen.

The detective arranged to meet Cannon at a restaurant, where he was arrested.

Online court records don't list a lawyer for Cannon, who is due in court Monday.

In an update to this story, the Communications Director of the Sedalia 200 School District, Bob Satnan, sent the following information to KSIS:

We would like to request that stories on the case against Paul R. Cannon note that Cannon moved to Sedalia after he retired from teaching and never taught in Sedalia. The wording used by the U.S. Attorney's Office and some media ("a retired Sedalia high school teacher") make it seem that he taught here.

Thank you for your consideration."
