A Sedalia man was killed while riding his bicycle Friday evening in Pettis County, the Missouri Highway Patrol has reported.

Patrick K. Gwaltney, 51, was riding on Route HH, east of Olive Branch Road around 7 p.m. when he was struck from behind by an eastbound 1999 Nissan Frontier driven by 26-year-old Marty L. Kropf, Smithton. Gwaltney was ejected from the bike and came to rest in a ditch. The Nissan continued eastbound several hundred feet before coming to rest. Gwaltney was pronounced dead at the scene by Pettis County Coroner Robert Smith at 7:15 p.m. His body was transported to the Boone County Medical Examiner's office, the report said.

The Nissan had minor damage and was towed from the scene by Don's Truck Towing. Kropf was not wearing a safety device, it was noted.
