Sedalia was recently named a 2017 Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation for commitment to urban forest management.

The Arbor Day Foundation says that Sedalia achieved the recognition by meeting the program's 4 requirements:

- Having a Tree Board

- Tree Care Ordinance

- An Annual Community Forestry Budget of at least $2.00 Per Capita

- Arbor Day Proclamation and Observance

Dan Lambe, President of the Arbor Day Foundation, said "Tree City USA communities see the impact an urban forest has in a community first hand." Lambe added, "recognition brings residents together and creates a sense of community pride," noting that trees improve the visual appearance of a neighborhood  when properly planted and maintained and can help increase property values. Lambe also mentioned another benefit is that trees can help reduce home cooling costs.

Arbor Day is April 27, 2018.
