An early evening structure fire at 1209 S. Grand was caused by a vehicle fire in the driveway and the home sustained  moderate damage to the south side of the house.

At approximately 4:28 a.m. Saturday, firefighters responded to a report of a house fire in the 600 block of W. 4th, and upon arrival of the first engine found a three-story house with fire smoke and fire showing. The house to the west was separated by a distance of approximately six feet and was starting to burn as well. The three-story house suffered heavy damage to the structure and contents and moderate damage to the house next door. The Missouri State Fire Marshal’s office was called in to assist SFD investigators to attempt to determine the cause. No one was home in the house at 623 W. 4th Street. However the occupants at 625 W. 4th were home at the time of the alarm.

Pettis County Fire District did have personnel on standby for mutual aid response if required. The SFD responded with two engine companies and one Truck Company.

Also during the night, SFD personnel responded to a fatality vehicle accident at 15th and Grand early in the evening and a rollover accident in the 1600 blk of W. Broadway at approximately 2:30 a.m.

The Pettis County Fire Protection District reported 10 fires they responded to over the weekend, with nine of them occurring on Saturday, March 18. They were designated as natural cover fires.

One injury was reported by a homeowner, when a lawn mower ignited a field on fire. There were no injuries reported by fire personnel.

The Pettis County Fire Chief asked all who are doing natural cover burning to be very aware of wind conditions and to take steps to ensure that the fire doesn't get out of hand.

In addition, it was requested that landowners notify the Pettis County Sheriff's Office when they plan to do a natural cover burn to eliminate unnecessary fire responses.
