Here's a look at some of the goings on in our area. 

The Women's Service League are selling tickets to the annual Cupid's Ball.

The Women’s Service League of Sedalia is planning its 18th Annual Cupid’s Ball, Frozen, for Saturday, February 28, 2015.  The ball  will take place at The Smith Cotton High School cafeteria.  Girls 5-12 years are invited to ask their favorite guy; father, stepfather, uncle, or grandfather to the dance. Tickets are $20 per person which includes light refreshments, a  professional 5×7 photograph and dancing. Tickets will be on sale Saturday,  January 10, 2015 at State Fair Community College in the Thompson  Conference Room located in the Heckart Building. Doors open at 8:00 am and close at 9:30 am.

The Smith Cotton Choral Society and the Smith Cotton National Honor Society present their annual Formal Exchange.

It’ll be held at the FEMA building on the Junior High campus, 312 East Broadway.  They’ll be hosting the event on Friday, January 9 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.  and on Saturday, January 10 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  They’ll have lines that start early and budget friendly prices and dresses for all occasions.  Pictures, snacks, drinks and prom related vendors will also be available.  Find out more information by calling Lorin at 660-851-5300.

There will be a breakfast at the American Legion  on Saturday, January 10.

The doors open at 2016 West Main street from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.  They'll have sausage, eggs, pancakes, biscuits and gravy, hash browns, juice and coffee for a cost of $6 for adults, and $3 for children under the age of five.  Delivery is available for two or more breakfasts.  Call 827-2750.

Sixteen choirs from 13 school districts will compete Jan. 10 at the 2015 State Fair Community College invitational Show Choir Festival in the Fred E. Davis Multipurpose Center on the Sedalia campus.

Performances by area high school show choirs will begin at 9 a.m. and continue until 6 p.m. when an awards ceremony will be held. The public is invited. Admission is $5 for the entire day; attendees may leave and re-enter throughout the day.  More than 400 singers and instrumentalists are expected to perform, one of the largest festivals SFCC has ever hosted. They will compete for awards in a variety of divisions including outstanding performance in small, medium and large school classifications as well as mixed and girls’ choirs. Awards also will be given for Best Male and Female Performer, Best of Show, Best Vocal Sound, Best Ballad Performance, and Best Choreography.Proceeds will help support the college’s Music Arts program.  For more information, call Ron Sayer, Music Arts program coordinator, at (660) 596-7269.

The public is invited to view both in the wild and indoor programs about nature at the 20th Annual Eagle Days at Smithville Lake, Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 10 and 11.
Eagle Days is hosted by the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC), the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Clay County Department of Parks and Recreation. The event includes wildlife viewing opportunities outdoors at the lake and indoor nature programs. The event’s general activities will be 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.   All Eagle Days activities are free. Seating is limited to 175 people during the indoor programs. Also on display will be nature exhibits by other public and private conservation organizations in the Kansas City area.   For information about Eagle Days at Smithville Lake, call (816) 532-0174. The Whitetails Unlimited Banquet will be held on Saturday, January 10.
It’ll be held at the State Fair Ag Building, 2503 West 16th.  The social hour will begin at 5:00 p.m.  and the buffet dinner  will be at 7:00 p.m.  The tickets are $35 for a single person, and $15 for each additional person or child.  They’ll have prizes, an auction, and games.  Call Harry at 596-8545 for tickets and visit www.whitetailsunlimited.com.
