It is hard to believe that football season is going into week four for the NFL, and some are using this time to get prepared for basketball season.  Tonight (October 1) will mark the beginning of basketball for State Fair Community College.

Basketball has thrived on "Midnight Madness," which is the first date players can practice with coaching supervision and guidance.  State Fair Community College is doing their version of Midnight Madness with "Back the Roadrunners" Night.  Fans will get to see what's in store for the upcoming season and get a first look at the new players.  Whether it be dunks, 3-pointers or passing skills, it should be a fun night as the Spririt Squad gets started at 6:30 p.m. followed by the skills challenge.

Athletic Director Darren Pannier also put together a celebrity basketball game between faculty and community members.  The game will feature SFCC members Mark Kelchner, Erin Wilson, Dan Page, John Morris, Robin Hargrave and others to be named later.  The community will be represented by Bob Satnan of the Sedalia Democrat, Sarah Grupe from Peak Performance, Kyle Herrick from Bryant Motors and Larry Ward from the Sedalia Police.  I will also be playing in the game as well as a few others to be named later.

The price of admission for "Back the Roadrunners Night" is small food items, which will go towards the Buddy Pack Program that provides weekend food backpacks for kids in the Sedalia schools.

While it has been a long time since I have hit the hardwood for any level of competition, it should be fun and a great opportunity to support our community. When you go shopping this week, please take the time and pick up some extra food items that our kids could use.  State Fair Community College suggests items such as pull-top cans of fruit and soup, cereal bars, mac and cheese, peanut butter and cheese crackers, drink boxes and things similar to that.

I'd also like to remind you that you can listen to Denny Perkins call the Roadrunner basketball games this season on Newstalk 1050 KSIS.  The official season does not start until the McDonald's Classic on November 2 and 3.

There is no time like the present to get behind the Roadrunners.  See you next Monday night at 6:30.
