Retired Sacred Heart faculty member and avid quilter, Sharon Dey, holds a bear she quilted while speaking to students about her involvement with the RARE Bear Army, a grassroots organization that quilts one-of-a-kind teddy bears for children with rare diseases..

Assistant principal, Holly Wilson, presented Dey with a check for $476.25 that will respond to the organization's request to help offset shipping costs. Shipping costs of a RARE Bear (domestic and international) can range from $7 to $20.

Funds were generated through SHS's all-school paid dress down day. Each month on an assigned day, students who bring 50 cents or more can wear casual attire instead of their school uniform. All proceeds raised from the monthly dress down days are directed to a charity.

Sacred Heart chose the RARE Bear Army as the organization to receive proceeds from its first dress down day of the school year as a way to honor Ms. Dey's 40-year teaching career at SHS.
