The 2016 high school football season opened with an overtime match for the Smith-Cotton Tigers, who fell to the Moberly Spartans 28-27. 

The Tigers led at the half 13-12, but Moberly took the lead in the third quarter and the game was tied at 20 at the end of regulation. In overtime, Smith-Cotton scored and took the lead 27-20. Moberly also scored on their chance in overtime, and went for a successful two-point conversion, which gave the Spartans a one-point victory over the Tigers.

Leading rushers for the Tigers were Blake Davis with 14 carries for 86 yards and sophomore Brandon Deal with 10 carries for 93 yards. Davis had two touchdowns, and Deal scored one.

The Tigers' home opener against the Marshall Owls will be Friday, August 26 at 7 p.m.
