Today Southwest Airlines announced plans to begin new once-daily nonstop flights between Kansas City International Airport (MCI) and John Wayne Airport (SNA) in Orange County, California, on November 22. This news comes on the heels of the recent unveiling of Missouri One, a Boeing 737-700 aircraft emblazoned with an artist’s rendition of the Missouri state flag and inauguration of nonstop service between Kansas City New York – LaGuardia on April 8.

John Wayne Airport is located approximately 35 miles south of Los Angeles, and serves more than three million people within the 34 cities and unincorporated areas of Orange County. Currently more than 500 passengers per day fly between Kansas City and the Los Angeles area, with more than 100 per day flying into John Wayne Airport. .

“As KCI’s fifth nonstop destination in California, Southwest’s new service to John Wayne Airport is a win for both business and leisure travelers alike,” said Mark VanLoh, Director of Aviation, Kansas City Aviation Department. “Whether flying west for meetings or taking in Orange County’s many attractions, the favorable timing of this new flight allows passengers departing from KCI to maximize their time in Southern California.”

“KCADC and its regional partners have attracted nearly a half dozen companies from the West Coast over the past two years, so the KC area is definitely on the radar of companies in that area,” said Bob Marcusse, president and CEO, Kansas City Area Development Council. “Nonstop service to major markets like Orange County helps make KC a more attractive business location.  This is a very positive announcement and we hope for more to come.”

Southwest Airlines currently operates 68 daily departures from Kansas City with nonstop service to 27 destinations.
