Sedalia’s Scott Joplin Ragtime Festival Kicks Off This Week

Sedalia is known for having a lot of music with the Pepsi Grandstand and Bud Tent at the Missouri State Fairgrounds, events like the Lions Club Blues, BBQ, and Cruise last weekend, plus the music at various venues during the year.  This week one of the more unique festivals of Sedalia takes place with the Scott Joplin Ragtime Festival. For those unaware, Scott Joplin was from Sedalia and wrote numerous pieces of music while playing at the Maple Leaf and Block 400 clubs.

Handicap Accessible Playground

Centennial Park’s Handicap Accessible Playground Opening Soon

The newest playground at Centennial Park, located at 16th and New York, is one that will benefit families with handicap children as well as children without handicaps. According to Sedalia Parks and recreations Director Mark Hewitt, the new park comes from conversations with parents who have no place for their handicapped children to play, while their other children enjoy the playgrounds

Community Members Pay Tribute to Librarian Lynn Phillips During Funeral Procession [PHOTOS]

The funeral for Lynn Phillips was held at the Celebration Center in Sedalia this morning (May 31).  Former students, parents and community members gathered along the east side of Highway 65 to honor the Skyline librarian by holding up children's books as the procession passed.  The tribute was organized by the Sedalia School District.

Touching Tribute Planned for Skyline Librarian Lynn Phillips

The Sedalia School District plans to have a tribute to their librarian, Lynn Phillips, who lost her battle with cancer on Saturday, May 26. They are asking students, past and present and anyone else who would like to line the east side of Highway 65 holding a children's book as the processional passes on Thursday, May 31. They ask that you be in place by 11:15 a.m.

The end of the school year is here, and Memorial Day weekend is a way most get into the swing of things as a family for the summer. While most will head out to the Lake of the Ozarks, go watch a baseball game or have a family reunion or picnic, a few years ago I started a tradition with my son, and I hope to share it with the whole family.

Denny and I headed to Council Bluffs, Iowa this weekend, and part of the allure of the town is the nearby casinos.  While I am not the biggest gambler in the world, I do like to go to the boats from time to time. I told Denny one of my great superstitions.

Vacationing Close to Home

There are a lot of events going on this weekend. This weekend the Mid Mo Outlaws travel to Council Bluffs, Iowa to take on the newly renamed Council Bluffs in what is one of the great rivalries of the American Professional Football League. So Denny and I are hitting the road with them, and we're looking forward to it. While we realize there is a football game, I highly recommend a trip to this area if you get the chance.
