Does Neanderthal DNA Make You Racist? [OPINION]

The other night I was watching a program on the History channel about Neanderthal man, and how DNA tests show that we have some of their genes. Some scientists blame the brutish nature of some of us and the lack of progress in acceptance of societal change on this DNA. Recently, I have had cause to believe if that is true, then some of us may have gotten a bigger dose of Neanderthal DNA than others.

Councilman Larry Stevenson Epitomizes Unprofessionalism at Sedalia City Council Meeting [OPINION] [VIDEO]

I would like to state first, that this is a personal opinion, and anyone who disagrees with me on the content should feel free to leave a response. As a newsman, I use opinion pieces sparingly and only if I feel they are justified.

At last night’s Sedalia City Council meeting (May 24), I witnessed what I feel was some very unprofessional behavior by newly elected 4th Ward Councilman Larry Stevenson. It is the first time since I have been covering the meetings that a council member has been ordered to sit down and be quiet numerous times. This happened last night in both the pre-council and the regular council meeting.

Winter Storm

Winter Storm Rocky is a Shining Example of Neighbors Helping Neighbors

Winter Storm Rocky may be out of the area, but it has caused a lot of havoc in Sedalia. The Central Missouri Coop had over 3,000 customers without power.  KCP&L had about 700 customers without power in Pettis County and thousands more across the region. The Missouri Department of Transportation has not had very much downtime since Winter Storm Q from last week, and they continue to try and keep Highways 13, 50, 65 and 70 open as best they can.

School Violence and Our Second Amendment Rights [OPINION]

It’s been a different kind of week leading up to the holiday.  As many of you know, I don’t bite my tongue.  The events that unfolded last week at Sandy Hook make me sick and confused.  Whether you say it or not, you feel for the parents, children and their community.

Reacting to Violence in the Wake of the Newtown Massacre [OPINION]

It is impossible to put into words the sorrow I feel about the heinous act committed in Newtown, Conn.  If there's one place we want to feel our children are safe, it is in school.  Couple that with the fact that this was an elementary school and it is next to impossible to wrap my mind around it.  26 people lost their lives and nobody will ever be able to make sense of it.

How About Ike for Secretary of Defense? [OPINION]

Since the re-election of President Barack Obama, there have been several Presidential Cabinet members that announced they would step down, or it is speculated some may step down from their second term. It is speculated that Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta may step down. It is said that John Kerry, Deputy Defense Secretary Ashton Carter and former defense policy undersecretary Michele Flournoy could fill Panetta's shoes whenever he decides to step down or if he does.

I would like to hear another consideration should the time come, Missouri's very own and former Congressman Ike Skelton. Skelton served as U.S. Representative for Missouri from 1977-2011, was a member of the House Armed Services Committee and even chaired it from 2006-2011.
