Severe Weather

There are several things to keep in mind during severe weather season, but overall, you should be prepared. "Be prepared" is not only the Boy Scout motto that I grew up on, but should be your mantra as well.

The National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma has issued a Tornado Watch for portions of western and central Missouri, including Pettis County.  The watch is effective this Thursday afternoon and evening until 9 p.m.

Mother Nature has unloaded rain across Missouri for the last 24-36 hours. According to Pettis County EMA Director, David Clippert, three to four inches of rain fell in Pettis County within a period of two hours this morning (April 3). We've had five to six inches of rain since yesterday.

TRENTON, Mo. (AP) — Officials are expected in northern Missouri to assess damage from heavy storms that hit the area, damaging homes and utility poles.

A Tornado Watch has been issued for Pettis County until 8 p.m. this evening (March 27). Large hail, damaging winds and tornadoes are possible.

Pettis County EMA Director Dave Clippert recently released a report reviewing Missouri's severe weather trends in 2013. In recent years, the amount of tornadoes have gone down for most of the country, but not in Missouri. According to Clippert, Missouri experienced 54 tornadoes in 2013, compared to 32 tornadoes in 2012.

The weather for the first weekend of summer has been great. Today (June 23), that could change. The National Weather Service says much of the Midwest region, including Kansas City, Topeka, Omaha, Des Moines, and portions of St. Louis are now under a slight risk for severe storms today and tonight. The primary hazards will be very large hail, damaging winds and possibly a tornado.

Severe thunderstorms, 60 mph winds and hail the size of ping pong balls battered Mid-Missouri on Monday (May 20).  The nasty weather included a small tornado in Pettis County and Tornado Warnings for Sedalia, LaMonte, Smithton and Green Ridge.  Some lost power and others sustained damage to their homes and vehicles.  Those that were prepared for the weather rode the storm out and may have been a l

On Sunday, at least 25 tornadoes pummeled states across the Midwest and Great Plains. At least two people died in the storms. Even more harsh weather, and not just tornadoes, is set to hit much of the rest of the country on Monday.
