The Missouri State Highway Patrol says a trooper who was shot in southwest Missouri is expected to recover.

Patrol spokesman Sgt. Jeff Kinder says the trooper was shot Wednesday morning on a county road near Mansfield in Wright County.

The trooper was responding to a call about a suspicious vehicle. Kinder says someone in the vehicle got into a gunfight with the trooper and both were hit.

The trooper suffered superficial wounds and was alert and conscious while being taken to a hospital. The suspect is hospitalized in Springfield but his condition was not immediately known.

Further details about the shooting are expected to be released Wednesday afternoon.
