Verdine Beverly Schmadeke, 85, of Sedalia, died Wednesday, November 18, 2015 at Fair View Nursing Home.

Born October 24, 1930 in Waterloo, IA, she was the daughter of Lloyd and Clara Louise Sturm Spear. Her mother died during childbirth so she was adopted by her mother’s brother John Sturm. She was raised by her mother’s sister and her husband, Arthur and Minnie Bouck. On October 21, 1950 in Waterloo, IA, she was married to Donald Schmadeke, who preceded her in death on February 2, 2008.

Mrs. Schmadeke attended West Union High in Waterloo, IA. In 1965 her husband was transferred to Anaheim, CA where they lived for 25 years before moving to Sedalia. While living in Anaheim, she worked at an electronics factory and also cared for children. She was a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary in Anaheim, where she was a Chaplain, helped carry the flag, and volunteered at the Veteran’s Hospital. She enjoyed camping with their travel trailer and fishing in Beaver, UT. She was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church in Anaheim, serving on the banquet committee for both church and school.

In 1982 Mrs. Schmadeke’s husband was transferred to Sedalia, where she was a member of the Welcome Wagon. She was a homemaker, who enjoyed embroidering, her flowers and the outdoors. She was an active member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, singing in the choir for many years and was a member of the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League, serving on the Bereavement Committee, and visiting Shut-Ins.

Survivors include a son, Mark Allen Schmadeke; two grandchildren, Jeremy Allen Schmadeke and Haley Dawn Schmadeke; and a great-granddaughter, McKenna Grace Monteer.

Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, November 23, 2015 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church with Pastor Jeremy Freeman officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be Fred Bauer and Jeremy Schmadeke. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. There will be no visitation.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church or School, in care of McLaughlin Funeral Chapel.
