World’s Oldest Living Man Turns 115 Years Old

On Thursday, Jiroemon Kimura of Japan, the world’s oldest living man and the third oldest man in recorded history, celebrated his 115th birthday. Happy birthday, Jiroemon! (It’s anybody’s guess how they fit that many candles on a cake.)

Kimura was born way, way back in 1896 and has — get this — seven children, 14 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great grandchildren.

The secret to his longevity is in eating small portions of food, said Kimura. If that’s true, we’re going to lay off the all-you-can-eat specials right away.

Technically, Kimura is what’s known as a supercentenarian, a person who’s 110 or older. According to the Gerontology Research Group, an organization dedicated to the research of aging, there are only 70 verified supercentenarians in the world today.
