Bothwell Auxiliary Awards Two Nursing Scholarships
The Bothwell Auxiliary recently awarded two $2,500 scholarships to area nursing students. Scholarships were awarded to Mattie Mergen and Madison Cooper, both of whom are employed at Bothwell Regional Health Center.
Mergen is a Registered Nurse in the hospital’s Critical Care Unit. She is pursuing a Master of Science in Nursing with an emphasis in Family Nurse Practitioner at Rockhurst University.
Cooper will begin the Associate Degree Nursing program at State Fair Community College in August 2026. She works at Bothwell as a Health Care Technician.
Lori Wightman, Bothwell CEO, said the scholarships make a meaningful difference for nurses pursuing further education.
“Investing in our nursing staff's education is one of the most important things we can do to strengthen care at Bothwell,” she said. “Scholarships like these help our nurses grow in their careers while staying right here in our community, and we're grateful to the Auxiliary for making that possible.”
The Bothwell Auxiliary, composed of approximately 80 volunteers, operates the Gift Shop on the hospital's first floor, sponsors scrub and other sales, hosts an ice cream social and conducts other projects that raise funds to support Bothwell and fund nursing scholarships. Since 2003, the Auxiliary has awarded 57 scholarships totaling $94,475. The Scholarship Committee includes Shirley McCown, Auxiliary president, Sue Heckart, Carolyn Sperry and Shirley Evans.
