Today (Aug. 2), the Johnson County Prosecutor's Office dismissed the case against Ziyad Abid in the murder of William Blaine Whitworth.

The following statement was released by Prosecuting Attorney Lynn M. Stoppy:

Abid was originally charged based on evidence resulting from the criminal investigation.  Very recently, our understanding of evidence previously obtained from a critical witness has changed.  As a result, the State is currently left without sufficient evidence to support the prosecution at this time.

Abid and Reginald L. Singletary of Warrensburg were each charged with one count of first degree murder and one count of armed criminal action in September of 2012. Singletary's trial is set for Sept. 17-20 at the Johnson County Justice Center.

We'll bring you more information on this story as we receive it.

UPDATE: The Warrensburg Police Department issued the following statement regarding the dismissal of charges against Ziyad Abid.

We are disappointed there was a need to dismiss the charges on Ziyad Abid in the William Blaine Whitworth homicide case.

As a law enforcement agency, our job is to investigate crimes to the fullest, and then not intercede in the prosecution process once the case has been turned over to them. We have full faith and the utmost respect in our Prosecuting Attorney and the State Attorney General’s Office and the difficult decisions they have to make.

Due to the fact that there is a pending criminal case against Reginald Singletary, we will make no further comment.
