A smoke alarm and quick action by a child are being credited with helping a southeast Missouri family safely escape a burning home.

KFVS-TV reports that the fire broke out around 3 a.m. Tuesday in Scott City. A child inside the home heard the smoke alarm and woke up the adults.

Fire Chief Jay Cassout says more than 10 people were inside, but everyone was able to get out safely.

The home was 80 percent destroyed. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
