Additional Information
On April 4 at 10 a.m., the Arrow Rock Lyceum Theatre will present a staged reading of (Brave), a powerful new play by Osage playwright Elise Bear.
Part of the Voices of Arrow Rock series, the production centers on the harrowing true historical journey of Me-ho’n-ga, a young Osage woman who traveled from the bluffs of Arrow Rock to the shores of France in 1827.
Brave follows Me-ho’n-ga and five other Osage travelers as they navigate unknown waters and betrayal on a quest for survival. After facing extreme hardship in Europe, Me-ho’n-ga finds an unexpected lifeline through a compassionate ally in France, eventually paving an arduous path back to her homeland.
The play explores trust, resilience, and the enduring strength of the Indigenous spirit. The production features Lulu Goodfox in the lead role of Me-ho’n-ga. A 17-year-old citizen of the Osage and Pawnee Nations, Goodfox is a rising star with credits at Second Stage Theater on Broadway and in the Peacock series Rutherford Falls.
Recently serving as the 2023–2024 Osage Nation Princess, Goodfox acted as a global ambassador for her Nation during the press tour for the Academy Award-nominated film Killers of the Flower Moon.
Playwright Elise Bear, also a citizen of the Osage Nation, brings a deep commitment to community-centric storytelling. Having served as a production assistant on Killers of the Flower Moon and collaborated with the First Americans Museum, Bear’s work bridges historical Osage narratives with contemporary performance.
“This story is rooted in the very land where the Lyceum stands,” said Bear. “It is an honor to bring Me-ho’n-ga’s voice back to Arrow Rock.”
Admission is free, and reservations are not required. Voices of Arrow Rock is sponsored by the Friends of Arrow Rock in partnership with the Arrow Rock Lyceum Theatre and the Arrow Rock Federated Church.
Funding is provided by the Buckner Foundation, the Christian Church of Mid America, the Missouri Arts Council and other individual philanthropists.
