Additional Information

The State Fair Community College Music Arts program will celebrate Music in Our Schools month in March by presenting its spring concerts at 7:30 p.m. March 8-9 in the Stauffacher Theatre on the Sedalia campus.

The students who participate in music arts represent various academic majors from agriculture and health sciences to music and liberal arts. They come from communities throughout Missouri and affirm the contributions music brings to a college education.

The program will feature the SFCC Chamber Choir, Jazz Choir and Jazz Runners jazz band performing music from a variety of eras in a variety of styles. Choral selections will include jazz standards such as “Java Jive” by Milton Drake, “Kansas City” by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller as well as sensitive choral settings of “O My Luve’s Like a Red, Red Rose” and “Go! Said the Star,” the rousing spiritual “Ain’t No Grave Can Hold My Body Down,” and a special tribute to the rock band Queen.

Instrumental selections will feature the jazz band’s interpretation of a number of songs including the jazz standard “Green Onions,” Oscar Hammerstein II’s classic “All the Things You Are,” and the Freddy Mercury, David Bowie collaboration, “Under Pressure.”

The choirs are under the direction of Ron Sayer, Music Arts program coordinator and instructor, and the jazz band is under the direction of Kelsey Shields, adjunct instructor. Gwen Kappelman will accompany the choirs.
